Do not stay here, Save yourselves the disappointment.

I won a competition last year & one of the prizes was a complimentary nights stay at this hotel, I foolishly paid & wasted £181 for the extra night for an extra night to enjoy my time in london with my mum, had I known what a disappointing stay it would be, I wouldn’t have bothered claiming my prize at all and I certainly wouldn’t have made my mum endure such a horrible experience. We arrived at the hotel on the Sunday afternoon, I rang the hotel to get clear directions as I didn’t receive anything from the hotel and we had never been to that area, we didn’t want to waste money on a taxi if it was only a short walk, I couldn’t understand the receptionist & she couldn’t give me clear directions to the hotel. We eventually arrived at the hotel, the lobby was clean & bright, we made our way to the second floor & to be honest I was hoping for a nice room, comfortable and big enough for two people to move around in. Sadly the room we got was awful, it was tiny and it was certainly not big enough for two people and not worth the money, even worse was, we were faced with brick walls and the added unpleasant noise of the hotels heating/cooling units underneath our window. We could not even open the window for any fresh air. The bathroom was cold even with the radiator on and the door shut. We had twin beds and were the most uncomfortable beds we’ve ever slept on, they had toppers on, why we do not know, both beds were a big lumpy lopsided mess, 2 awful nights sleep & a mediocre breakfast in the morning, nice selection of food, all quite hot if up early enough, nothing to get excited about. On one evening outside the hotel my mother fell over on the pavement right outside the restaurant hurting her hands & knees, she was lucky she did not injure herself seriously. Why is there is a stupid bump (which isn’t noticeable especially in the dark) when the rest of this pavement area outside the restaurant is flat? This is dangerous & someone could really injure themselves. We were extremely disappointed that we were not made aware when booking our stay that the hotel bar and restaurant would be closed on both Sunday & Monday nights. It is appalling that this information was not given. Our stay was disappointing, uncomfortable & not worth the money, complete rip off, we wish we could erase from our minds. Do not stay here waste your money or time here, there are far better, more comfortable hotels/b&bs. This hotel will make your soul sore.

The Mercure is well located close to Holborn and Russell Square stations and the British Museum. The hotel is clean and comfortable but is in need of some renovations. The paint in our room had been noticeably touched up and the bathroom door was water damaged. Not big things but for the price expected a bit more luxury.
